New idea - personal sewing lessons

Leave a comment on what you think of this idea.  I have a lot of people asking about different projects and times that JoAnn's does not have the flexibility to do.  What do you think of individual sewing classes offered in peoples homes?  I am willing to do individual instruction for $15 an hour per person, plus travel expenses if the house is more than 10 miles from Lowry park.  I have 25 years experience sewing both garments and quilts, but would only be teaching entry level stuff.  If it is quilting I would be willing to go $30 an hour with up to 4 people since we would all be doing the same pattern.  My email is kevinsquiltclass@gmail.com

Bargello Quilts

I have been looking at Etsy tonight wondering if selling quilts on there would be a way to earn some extra money.  I don't think that would be a good venue for me.  I love quilting, but not the stress of doing it for others.  So instead I thought why don't we do a Borgello class?  look this type of quilt up on Etsy and see what you think.  I haven't made one yet, but the method is the same as the Quick trip quilts.  Just sew together some strips, cut them and sew them together again.  We could easily do one of these in a four session class.  My email for class related news and ideas is kevinsquiltclass@gmail.com.
Hi there!!
Today I am going to begin by posting A few of the quilts I have made.  These are fairly simple designs that can be completed in a 12 hour class format.  My approach to quilting is that it has to be easy.  There are enough fabric colors, textures and block shape combinations to keep any simple quilt exciting.  The best way to improve is to do the same exercises over and over, until you have mastered them.  All of my quilts can be easily adjusted from crib size to king size by adding or subtracting blocks and borders.   I have not designed these patterns myself so I will include where to find the patterns when I can.

All three of these quilts are from the Quilt in a Day series from Eleanor Burns.  The patterns are included in her Quick Trip Quilts book.  The red and black quilt is a lap size, the brown a king size and the purple a queen size.  These are great patterns for beginners because they are all straight lines.  The only part that is difficult is keeping all the strips in order.   I don't recommend doing anything larger that a lap quilt until you have at least three or four finishes under your belt.  While the techniques are simple and straight forward, it does take some practice to manage the sheer bulk of a quilt when you are doing a larger size.  It is very easy to get discouraged.  Concentrate on your skills for the first few projects and then move up to larger quilts.  Keep in mind that every time you move up a bed size you should do a simple pattern first time out.  Learning to manage both a complex pattern and a larger size quilt at the same time will not be fun.  That is why we quilt, right?  FOR FUN!!!

Quilt's and classes

This is going to be where I post pictures of my classes and quilts.  I currently teach sewing and quilting at JoAnn Fabrics in Citrus Park Florida.
